If you’d prefer white-glove delivery into your home with setup and free removal of your old mattress – we offer this at a reasonable and subsidized price.

Can sleep help prevent these health risks?

You know how you feel when you haven’t gotten a good night’s rest. You might be more sleepy and sluggish, and less productive at school or work. But have you ever stopped to think about what other consequences poor sleep might have? There are several other deeper effects of poor sleep that may not be as immediately noticeable. Here are five negative effects of poor sleep you may not know about.

It may increase risk of cardiovascular disease

There is more and more evidence pointing towards a possible correlation between poor sleep and heart disease. One group of researchers looked at all available studies that investigated the association between poor sleep and the risk of developing or dying from cardiovascular disease. They defined “poor sleep” as either difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or restless and disturbed nights. They found that poor sleep was actually associated with a 45% increased risk of developing or dying from heart disease.

It may increase risk of cancer

Did you know that sleep problems have been associated with a higher prevalence of cancer? In fact, shift work has been labeled a carcinogen. Taking longer to fall asleep, waking up during the night, low sleep quality, and getting an unrefreshing sleep have all been determined to be predisposing factors to cancer. This goes for developing cancer, during cancer treatment, and even in advanced cancer.

It can increase risk of depression

Researchers have stated over and over the link between poor sleep and major depressive episodes. An individual who gets poor sleep is more likely to have a major depressive illness, such as major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. Studies have even shown that persistent insomnia is associated with the development of a new depressive episode. One study in particular looked at Veterans with insomnia. They found that each 7-point decrease in the Insomnia Severity Index score was associated with a 65% reduction in suicidal thoughts. What was also significant was the effect that decreased insomnia severity had on depression severity. They also discovered that those Veterans receiving cognitive behavioral therapy treatment for insomnia also experienced a statistically significant reduction in suicidal ideation.

It can lead to pain

It may not necessarily be surprising to you that people with chronic pain can experience a worsening of this pain when they have poor sleep. But it may shock you to know that sleep deprivation in healthy individuals can cause symptoms of fibromyalgia. These include muscle pain, tenderness, and fatigue. In fact, studies have shown that poor sleep is a risk factor for the development of chronic pain throughout the body in otherwise healthy people. Researchers have found that sleep deprivation impairs the pain inhibition pathways in our bodies which are there to help us control and cope with pain. Studies that have been performed with various drug and non-drug therapies have found that increased sleep quality can reduce both pain and fatigue.

It can lead to bone loss

Osteopenia, also known as bone loss, can increase the risk of fractures and bone disease. Researchers have found that declined sleep quality, trouble falling asleep, and a one hour later sleep timing are all associated with osteopenia. This study in particular looked at middle-aged individuals, so you don’t necessarily need to be elderly to feel the effects of bone loss.

In summary…

A bad night’s sleep doesn’t just have consequences the next day. It can have negative effects that last. So if you want to protect your heart, mind, bones, and the rest of your body, make sure you are getting proper sleep.

The Positions That Keep Us Comfortable All Night

We all know that sleep is a state of the body, which is characterized by decreased activity of consciousness, relatively lower sensitivity, and inactivity of the majority of skeletal muscles. It is also the time when anabolic processes related to recovery work their best, such as the immune, nervous, musculoskeletal system. Sleep is food and water to the mind, as careful as we are about what we eat, we need to be just as diligent about getting the best rest that we can to feed our brain and body.

Positions for Sleeping

Have you noticed the position in which you sleep? The position in which you sleep is essential to whether you will feel rested when you wake up. Whether or not your night of rest cures your aches and pains will rely heavily on the position you fall asleep in. So what are our sleeping positions options and what does each one do for you?

On your back with your arms at your sides

In this position, the body can rest well. When we sleep on our backs, we decrease pressure on the neck and spine. The downside to back sleeping is that it often increases snoring, the proper pillow support under your neck can resolve this problem.

On your back with your hands raised

This position would have your legs slightly apart and your arms raised. This position also decreases pressure on the spine and is helpful for those struggling with back pain and discomfort. This position, as with all back positions, increases the risk of snoring.

On your stomach

Sleeping on your stomach improves digestion. The disadvantage to this sleeping position is that in most cases, people rotate their head to one side or the other on either side, leading to tension in the neck and unpleasant pain and stiffness. Sleeping on your stomach can lead you to back pain.

In the fetal position

In this position, your body is turned to one side and one or both legs are pulled into the body. This may be one of the most comfortable positions and is preferred by most people, but it quite straining your back and neck. But, if you have problems with snoring, this posture can help.

On your side

Sleeping on your side is most comfortable with a pillow between your knees, otherwise, the leg that is on top, often creates a twisting of the pelvis, causing discomfort in the lumbar spine. Additionally, this position proved to be useful for alleviating the tension that builds up in twisting the upper leg.

Experimenting with different sleep positions can help you to figure out what your sweet spot is. It can be helpful to try out a different position for a few nights and see which is the best for you. Whether it’s back, side, or stomach, people tend to wake up in the position that their bodies naturally snooze in.

We all know that good enough sleep is crucial for everyone. Your behaviors can have a major impact on your sleep and can contribute to restlessness at night. You can change how you sleep for the better by experimenting with these tips:

Be sure your bed is comfortable

It sounds simple, but your bed covers should leave you enough space to turn around comfortably in the bed.

Stick to a sleep schedule

You should try to keep the same bedtime and wake-up time each day, even on the weekends when we all feel so tempted to sleep in and recover from our work week. Every night before bedtime, try to write down three tasks that you would like to achieve in the coming days. This helps to regulate your body’s clock and could help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night. Don’t go to bed unless you are sleepy.

Exercise daily

Exercising is a great habit to not only keep your physical body healthy but your mental body healthy! Exercising every day will make it easier to fall asleep at night since you have exerted energy before snoozing.

Keep your room dark and quiet

Is Your Sleep Schedule Aging Your Skin?

Besides healthy eating and regular exercise, sleep is one of the three pillars of a healthy body. When we get enough sleep, our body works like a clock, it does not fail. When there is a lack of sleep, especially in the chronic form, your health could deteriorate, and along with it, so can your appearance. While you sleep, your body’s nervous system switches to a parasympathetic state, which allows greater circulation and oxygen flow to the skin.

It turns out that when you sleep less or seem to have chronic nightmares, the leads to the appearance of wrinkles, dryness, and skin laxity become more prominent, making the skin more susceptible to ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, painful sunburn can occur faster. The reason for this process is that cells do not have time to be updated during the night, at a time when it should be done more intensively.

Studies show that pores can increase 2-fold, as well as redness on the skin surface. When you have a lack of sleep, the biological rhythms are interrupted. There is a decrease in the production of the growth hormone, a production which is essential to skin regeneration.

Get out the face scrub – by massaging a face scrub into your skin, you will remove dead cells and promote blood flow.
Harness the power of makeup
Be sure to include foods with lots of antioxidants packed in. These are foods like blueberries and apples that relax the arteries to increase blood flow.
